Spiced Mirliton Puffs

Makes 6 Servings
Ingredients
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 2 mirlitons, peeled and diced ¼ inch thick (about 3 cups)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground allspice
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 (10-ounce) package frozen puff pastry shells
  • Sweetened whipped cream, to serve
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 425°.
  2. In a medium skillet, melt 3 tablespoons butter over medium-high heat. Add mirlitons, and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender and golden brown, about 5 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, combine sugars, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, and ginger. Add sugar mixture to mirliton mixture, and bring to a boil over medium heat; reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes. Add remaining 1 tablespoon butter, stirring until melted. Cook, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, and let cool.
  4. Bake pastry shells according to package directions. Let cool, and remove “tops” of pastry shells.
  5. Fill each pastry with 2 to 3 tablespoons mirliton filling. Serve with whipped cream, and top with pastry tops, if desired.
