We love a traditional old-fashioned, but this seasonal version of the sip might be our new favorite.
Rum and Rye Spiced Old-Fashioneds
Makes 2 Servings
Ingredients
- 4 ounces rye whiskey
- 4 ounces aged rum
- 1 ounce Fall Spice Simple Syrup (recipe follows)
- Garnish: orange peel twists, Amarena cherries, whole star anise
Instructions
- In a cocktail shaker, add whiskey, rum, and Fall Spice Simple Syrup; shake until well combined. Strain over 2 to 3 ice cubes in 2 glasses. Garnish with orange peel, cherries, and star anise, if desired.
Fall Spice Simple Syrup
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 3 whole cloves
- 4 allspice berries
- 2 whole star anise
- Peel of 1 medium navel orange
- ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon aromatic cocktail bitters*
- 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
Instructions
- In small saucepan, combine sugar and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Add cinnamon, cloves, allspice, star anise, and orange peel. Remove from heat, and stir bitters and ginger into syrup; cover and let cool completely, about 1 hour.
- Strain before using. Refrigerate in an airtight glass container for up to 2 weeks.
