After his time in the army, Stephen Bateman—founder of Down the River Forge—found himself at a crossroads. His fascination with knives, an essential tool he had always carried, spurred his initial foray into knife-making while he attended the University of Texas at San Antonio. The spark was ignited when he returned home to Louisiana for the holidays in 2018, determined to forge his first knife. Armed with rudimentary tools and a chiminea filled with coal, he crafted a crude knife from a scavenged railroad spike. This solidified his passion and set him on a path of relentless improvement.
In naming his business, Stephen drew inspiration from his favorite retreat: the Boothville-Venice area, down the Mississippi River. “Down the River” became synonymous with his brand, reflecting the genuine connection to the place where he honed his skills and found solace. Today, Down the River Forge operates out of a converted workshop in his backyard, a testament to his dedication and resourcefulness.
Stephen’s entrepreneurial journey was not without its challenges. As a self-taught craftsman, he navigated the steep learning curve of metalworking through endless trial and error. Each type of knife, from hunting blades to kitchen cleavers, required a different approach, pushing him to master various techniques and materials. His perseverance paid off, and by 2020, Stephen was making knives of impeccable quality, documenting his progress on social media. This transparency allowed his followers to witness his growth from rough beginnings to refined craftsmanship.
Stephen’s continuous quest for knowledge enabled him to move beyond the basics of heating and shaping steel, diving into research on proper heat treatments and the best types of steel for various applications. Stephen’s lineup includes kitchen and utility knives, as well as oyster shuckers, all named to honor Louisiana’s rich culinary heritage. As a father of two (soon to be three), Stephen balances his craft with family life, often working in short bursts when time allows.
