What started as a way to share food pictures from her travels has turned into an all-out passion for food and sharing her findings with her followers. Focusing mostly on her love for the cuisine and culinary culture in her native New Orleans, where she was born and raised, Evelyn Bories focuses on sharing her favorite dishes, restaurants, and excursions with the community that has blossomed alongside her on social media. We caught up with Evie to talk about her success and discuss her current favorite bites.
What made you start sharing your food journeys on social media? So, growing up, my family would share pictures of what we were eating from restaurants or what someone made. When Instagram started, I was first on it for personal interest and then I studied abroad in Florence, Italy, and I made a separate account just as a college food diary experience. I eventually came back home after college, and I wanted to just have fun with it, and it kind of grew from there.
What have been some of your favorite food trends throughout the years? I always say New Orleans is a little behind when a trend hits. It always kind of hits later, like when pork belly or Brussels sprouts became big. Now, a lot more restaurants are trying to become more Instagram-friendly, like with more picturesque interior designs, which sometimes works but not always. That’s always interesting because I feel like when I first started, I felt kind of awkward taking pictures, but now, it’s nice that it’s so welcomed.
What’s your favorite season to eat in Louisiana? Oh, I love summer tomatoes. Like, there’s nothing better than a tomato sandwich. I’m also a sucker for oyster season, and I love the fall and October weather. I always try to get my fix on that. Eggplants are my favorite vegetable, and I recently had a really good eggplant dish at Miss Shirley’s, which is one of current favorite spots.
Where are your other current favorite places to grab a bite? Right now, I can’t stop eating Francolini’s sandwiches. And another place that just won a James Beard Award is Dakar NOLA. Kenji Omakase in downtown is so good, and Addis Ethiopian Kitchen in Mid-City is one of my all-time favorites.
